The Firemouth Cichlid is also commonly known as the Redbreasted Cichlid. Is name 'Firemouth' or 'Redbreasted' is derived from the red/orange coloring just under its mouth. The male tends to be larger and more colorful than the female.

This species of Cichlid is an egg layer and they form monogamous pairs with both parents helping to care for the fry.
